Experience Sushi of Gari’s signature “omakase” at its finest. The chef chooses from many innovative sushi creations all of which you are sure to enjoy. All of the chef’s creations are creative and unique yet also exquisitely prepared.
Chef Gari has been preparing sushi since the age of nineteen when he was drawn to the artistic nature of sushi as a young boy in Tokyo. At Sushi of Gari, he still holds the same passion for sushi and promises that your meal will be distinctive and inventive.
Gari initially came to the United States in June 1978 in order to help a friend with the opening of a new Japanese restaurant in New York City. Subsequently, he worked as a Sushi Chef for several Japanese restaurants in NYC. During this period, while working, Gari observed many diners eating sushi in undesirable manner. He found that customers used too much soy sauce. In fact, they dipped whole pieces of sushi in the soy sauce, which caused them to taste nothing but the sauce instead of the delicate succulent sushi pieces. Gari wanted diners to enjoy the fresh taste of the fish as well as the delicate sushi rice instead of the soy sauce, so he tried explaining to his customers the better way to eat sushi, with little success.

Next, he decided to create his own brand of sauce to put directly on the sushi during the preparation stage. This meant that customers were saved the trouble of gauging the amount of sauce needed for each piece of sushi. In addition they would truly enjoy the taste of each sushi piece, which was prepared with the perfect amount of sauce, thereby experiencing the true taste of sushi. Having eaten at various restaurants in New York, Gari determined that he could create a variety of sauces that would go well with sushi in a similar pattern to world’s other cuisines such as French and Italian.
In January 1997, Gari decided to finally open his own restaurant, Sushi of Gari, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. His main focus continues to be his desire to serve his sushi with the original sauce and toppings he has created. These sauces only serve to enhance the sensitive taste and flavor of each morsel of fish. Since 1997, Gari’s influence has grown as he has opened three more restaurants, two in Manhattan and one in Tokyo.

They are terrible at delivery. I have tried twice - the first time it hadn't come for an hour and a half, and then I called and they promised it was on its way, but it never came. I called to have it cancelled but they still charged me. Tried the second time in case the first was an anomaly and because I have heard the food is worth it, but again, the delivery took nearly two hours, and the staff was unhelpful. Not worth ordering.

I eat at Gari frequently, but this was my first time with delivery. Fish was good, but they only give you one piece of sashimi instead of 2 pieces "per order" as listed on SeamlessWeb. They denied any responsibility for the website and made no offer, but did call back 20 minutes later and acknlowledge the error and offered replacement. Not worth delivery IMO, but the Omakase at the counter is tops.

The management (they said they were the management) was extremely rude at Sushi of Gari. I listed a new phone number in the contact field for them to call, as well as tried to make a call to the restaurant to let them know. However, the only option when you dial their number is to make a reservation or listen to a recording of their location. The food hadn't come within an hour, so I called the restaurant to double check they dialed the right number, which they hadn't (I was able to talk to someone by calling the reservation line). The "manager" screamed at me for being "irresponsible." The yelling continued for over 5 minutes, as they refused to re-make my sushi even for me to come pick up. They also then refused to refund my money. At one point the manager put down the phone and answered a personal call and then picked my line back up and continued screaming. I have turned them in to my corporation, which is a large investment bank that they serve food to nightly. They didn't even take this into consideration when I called... do not eat here.

I ordered from here twice. Both times, it took awfully long time for my meals to be delivered (well over one hour). They taste good though.

Pricey, but I can't imagine getting better delivery sushi anywhere. It's a nice treat.

Excellent fresh fish. Mixed up the order and immediately fixed it with a comp item too. Great spot for sushi snobs.
