Butai is a traditional yet innovative Robata restaurant. In Japanese, the word "robata" means "by the fire side" and refers to the centuries-old country style of cooking of the Northern Japanese fishermen. Evenings in coastal villages found fisherman cooking their catch over an open fire, then sharing among each other by passing food from boat to boat.

Delicious possibilities are limited only by the whim of your palate and the size of your appetite. You can order any item from any section of the menu at any time.

I think this place needs some more attention. They are alittle left in the dark. Located in a great area - right near flation/Gramercy/Union Square. A good place for sushi before you go out. Went the other night with some friends and we had a blast. They even gave us our first drink on the house! We were pretty excited.

Great location right in Union Square/Gramercy Area. This place is a little hidden between the avenues. They have some great slections. Good sushi - reccomenend the inside out rolls. Thier skewers are pretty good too. Nice space on the second floor - perfect for an event and very reasonable pricing.
one of the best sushi places in gramercy area. puts japonais to shame.

Butai is a beautiful space with excellent food and very reasonable prices. All of the plates are small, so you order several. With such reasonable prices, the menu really encourages you to try new things. The menu is quite extensive and many of the dishes are different from the standard Japanese food. Great location and good for big parties.
